How Many Polycarbonate Roofing Sheets And Accessories Do You Need? - Tuflite Polymers

Are you planning for a new roof, a patio, a pergola, a carport, or anything similar? The best material you can use to build the roofs of such structures is polycarbonate. And, when you want to build a polycarbonate roof, you will have to calculate as to how many roofing sheets you will need. When you choose the polycarbonate sheet you want to choose – the type, the colour, the texture, and the finish – you will want to place the order of the right number of sheets. You wouldn’t want your work to be hindered because of the shortage of sheets, would you?

Calculating the number of sheets you will require
A standard polycarbonate sheet is generally 800-850 mm in width, but after the overlap, the width that is left for usage is only around 750mm. You will need to divide the length of your roof area by 0.750 to determine the number of sheets you need. So, if you have a structure that is 5m long, you will need 7 sheets (6000/750 = 6.66)
Note – If you have a gable roof structure, you will need to double the number of sheets so that you can cover both the sides with roofing.
Calculating the length of sheets you will require
Once you have got the number of sheets worked out, you will need to determine the length of sheet you need. For this, you need to consider the angle of the roof. Run your tape measure along the long length of your rafter, and add 50 mm allowance for overhanging into the gutter. This will give you the length you require. Generally, a 5 degree fall is required from the top of the structure to the gutter. Polycarbonate sheets are generally sold in increments of 300-600 mm lengths.
Determining the roofing accessories
  • Along with the roofing sheet, you also need the right roofing accessories. Calculating how many fixings you will need for your roof is also important. Roofing sheets are supported by timber or steel members known as purlins. The purlin size and spacing follow the specifications of the roof sheets that you are to install. Keep all the purlins at equal spacings, under the maxixmum available spacing to give your roof a uniform look, without exceeding the maximum specifications of the sheets.
  • You also need screws to fix the sheets in place. You will need to pre-drill a 10mm hole to allow for expansion and contractions of the sheets that will occur with temperature changes, before inserting the screws. To calculate the number of screws you will need, you must multiple the square meter measurement of your roof by 8.
  • Next, you require a purlin tape, which is a strip of foam having an adhesive on one side, which sticks to the top of the purlins. This helps in keeping the expansion noise of the roof sheets to the minimum. A single roll of purlin tape measures 20 meters, so accordingly you can buy the number of rolls you require.

Why Has Polycarbonate Gained Such Popularity?

Polycarbonates are a group of strong thermoplastics that contain carbonate groups in their chemical structures. With the chemical structure being (−O−(C=O)−O−), we can see how they have received their name because of the carbonate groups bonded together.

Polycarbonates are transparent, strong, durable, and flexible materials that are resistant to impact, weather, temperature, fire, chemicals, and corrosion. All these properties have made polycarbonates one of the most preferred materials to be used in the construction industry today, especially as an alternative to glass. Also, because they are easy to work with – easy to cut, easy to drill, easy to install, easy to handle, easy to mould, and easy to thermoformed – they have found their space in a variety of other applications too.

Residential Vs Commercial Flat Roof - Tuflite Polymers

Both commercial and residential flat roofing belong to the low slope roofing category, but they both are very different from each other.

Design
Commercial flat roofing is entirely flat with slight pitches for draining water. Flat roofs in such applications are required for routine inspections and maintenance. Residential flat roofing on the other hand can be experimented with different designs. There are no rules here as they can carry the structural weight.

Size
Commercial roofing has a wider space as compared to residential roofs, because of the functionality it has to offer. Commercial flat roofs need to be highly functional and practical, which is why size matters more than the appearance here. They don’t have to appear extravagant or elaborated; instead they need to be able to follow the minimum structural requirements required. On the other hand, residential roofing could be sized as per the owner’s preference. It doesn’t need to be wide enough for other heavy equipment. It should just be proportional to the area of the house.

Materials
The roofs vary a lot in cost, performance, qualities, and longevity based on the materials they are made of.

Metal This is a lightweight material that is very easy to install. It also comes in a wide range of colors to suit your design preferences. However, one drawback here is that it is comparatively expensive. The metal category could include a variety of materials like steel, aluminum, zinc, tin, and copper. All these metals can generally last up to 50 years, and are known to be fire-resistant. Due to all these reasons, metal roofing sheets are preferred for both residential and commercial applications.

Built-up roofing This material is made from tar and gravel stacked together one over another. This is one of the most affordable options, making it highly preferred in the commercial applications. This material is also very superior in strength, and can last for anywhere between 25-40 long years.

BitumenThis roofing system is made from asphalt, fiberglass, and other synthetic polyester materials. It has amazing waterproofing and insulating capabilities. It is also tear-resistant, and can withstand heavy foot traffic. But, in spite of these qualities, it is a very cheap roofing system that can last for 20-30 long years.

EPDM The cheapest option, EPDM is an effective waterproofing providing commercial roofing material. It is also very lightweight and flexible, meaning being easy to use and install. However, it is available in only a limited color selection like black and white.

Polycarbonate Polycarbonate is the latest material used for both residential and commercial applications, where transparency or semi-transparency is required. Available in a wide range of color and texture options, polycarbonate can be used to match or strikingly contrast the rest of the building. It is a flexible, lightweight, extremely durable material that is resistant to breakage, fire, impact, corrosion, and solvents. Thus, it is the perfect material that you can use for almost any kind of roofing application. You can get the best quality polycarbonate roofing sheets at Tuflite Polymers, where you can choose from a wide range of colors, textures, and types.

All That You May Want To Know About Polycarbonate Sheet - Tuflite Polymers

Polycarbonate roofing sheets have gained immense popularity among architects and interior designers today for building a variety of constructions, may it be residential or commercial. Polycarbonate is one of the most versatile materials in the plastics segment that is used not only in the construction industry, but in a wide range of other applications like optical wear, medical devices, security systems, automobiles, and more. What has made this material so unique, let us see in this blog.

What is polycarbonate?
Polycarbonate is a group of thermoplastic polymers containing carbonate groups in their chemical structures, which makes the material easy to mould and thermoform. In fact, polycarbonate received its name because of the multiple carbonate groups that they contain.

Where are polycarbonates used?

The most common applications of polycarbonates include –
·        Construction industry – Skylights, skywalks, pergolas, windows, swimming pool enclosures, railway stations, stadiums, carports, patios
·        Optical industry – Eye wear, swimming goggles, safety eyewear
·        Security industry – Riot shields, bulletproof windows, police helmets
·        Data storage industry – CDs, DVDs, Blu-Ray discs
·        Automobile industry – Bezels, optical reflectors, headlamp lenses, cockpits
·        Electronic industry – LCD screens, plasma screens, mobile phone screens
·        Others – Medical devices, sign boards, food processing components

These are only some of the most common applications where polycarbonates are used. Today, polycarbonate has gotten involved in a variety of industries and applications, almost everywhere where it can replace glass and other plastics.

What has made polycarbonate so popular?
Polycarbonate has a variety of unique characteristics blended together, which has made it so popular to be used in almost all industry segments. Some of the unmatchable characteristics include –
Strong yet flexible – Polycarbonate is a strong and durable material yet very flexible. It has an impact resistance that is 200 times that of glass, meaning that it is virtually unbreakable and can withstand all kinds of climates, environmental conditions, and impacts. However, this strength and durability do not have it compromising on the flexibility of the material. Even though it is strong, it is flexible enough to form a variety of shapes, even domes and circular roofs, which is not possible in other alternatives like glass.

Resistance – Polycarbonate is not only impact resistant. It is resistant to a variety of other components like chemicals, moisture, fire, and scratches. Polycarbonate remains unaffected when comes in contact with chemicals and moisture. It is also the best material to be used in areas that are prone to fire as it never catches fire.

Insulation – Polycarbonate has great insulation properties. It insulates better than glass, thus lowering energy costs. Especially, when multiwall polycarbonates are used, the insulation level is very high because of the multiple layers of polycarbonates stacked together. This is why multiwall polycarbonateroofing sheets are the most ideal choice for conservatories and greenhouses.

Aesthetic appeal – Polycarbonate is available as transparent as glass, which is why it has replaced almost all applications where glass is used. However, it has an added advantage to glass. Unlike glass, polycarbonate is available in a variety of colors, which can be chosen to either match or contradict the other visual elements of a construction with which polycarbonate is used. Also, polycarbonate is available in a variety of textures and finishes, which not only adds to the visual appeal, but also makes it a great option to be used in applications where semi-transparency is required.

After reading all of this, if you have also decided to use polycarbonate for your application, get in touch with Tuflite Polymers to get the finest quality polycarbonate roofingsheets, which are available in a variety of colors, sizes, textures, and types for you to choose from.

ETFE – The Perfect Choice For An Enclosed Structure That Grows Grass

Have you ever been to a stadium? Have you noticed the grass and the coverings? Or, at least you may have seen stadiums in the television. You may think that the grass is actually artificial or is turf. However, this is not the case with every stadium. There are some stadiums that have artificial grass, and then there are others who grow real grass. And, to protect this grass from the outdoor environment against excess heat during summers, excess cold during winters, heavy rainfall during monsoons, and strong storms during autumn, it is advisable to have an appropriate covering for the stadium. One of the best materials one can use for this purpose is ETFE foil.

Why Should You Choose ETFE Coated Solar Panels?

Solar power, which is the conversion of energy from sunlight to electricity by using photovoltaics, has made major strides over the last few years, and has established itself as a major player in the power industry. Photovoltaic solar panels are used to absorb sunlight as a source of energy to generate electricity. The modules present within the panels use light energy from the sun to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The modules generally use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin-film cells that are connected electrically in series.

However, the choice of material that will coat the photovoltaic cells is one of the most important aspects while choosing or constructing a solar panel. Lately, ETFE foil has been adopted as an additional outer protective layer for such panels. This is a fluoropolymer that can withstand high levels of thermal stress and chemical aggression. Moreover, ETFE shows a 95% UV permeability, making it an excellent polymer for this field of application! In addition, ETFE is also a very intelligent material in terms of its chemical properties. This is because it is a self-cleaning material that doesn’t let dust and grime stay on its surface. It washes it away during rainfall, thus staying protected, and maintaining its transparency for its entire lifetime of more than 2 decades! Furthermore, ETFE is also 100% recyclable, meaning it benefits even after its life. Also, it doesn’t require any chemical solvents or petroleum products, thus also being environment-friendly. Because of all these reasons, ETFE is recommended for usage in particularly hot and dry environments and climates, which makes it an ideal choice for solar panels.
